It’s only saving grace is that it’s extremely simple and easy to win as long as your enemy doesn’t get a lucky hit in. I can’t believe it, but they actually managed to make combat worse than Gothic 2. I killed two dragons with my bow as we stood in full view of each other and not that far away and they never moved an inch (well, maybe they moved half an inch backwards after each impact from the tremendous force of my arrows hitting them). Humanoids still get slaughtered by animals (which is particularly amusing when you go out with the various “experienced” hunters, kill the bulk of your “prey” while they get cut to pieces by the remainder). The best thing to do in combat is to simply mash the attack button while moving in the direction of the nearest enemy. You can try to twist your way out of them if you get hit and succeed some of the time, but all of my deaths come as a result of being hit 5-10 times over the course of half as many seconds. There are no stunlock deaths, I repeat, no stunlock deaths in Gothic at present. Gothic 3’s framerate is, at the very least, relatively constant whereas NWN2’s changes radically depending on where you are. Gothic 3 Doesn’t seem to dip below 20 ever, and seems to hover more in the high 30s. That’s with all the graphical features turned off/down as low as they’ll go. NWN2 at 1280x1024 (my LCD’s native res) runs about 20FPS tops, and indoors it tops out at about 10-15. Seems maybe medium is the sweet spot or something.Īs for comparison to NWN2, the difference in performance is dramatic for me. But yes, I did notice a bunch of graphical glitches as well when I switched to high detail. Oblivion ran okay for me, but Gothic 3 runs better. I have 2gb and don’t get any stuttering so that might be the case. I’ve heard Gothic likes having lots of ram. So while I’m sure the game is good, I think I’ll see what state any forthcoming patches bring it to after I’m done with FFXII and NWN2. Honestly, I would probably be more willing to try and tweak it if it didn’t take like five minutes to load. I did try turning the shaders in Gothic 3 down a notch, but that introduced some wacky graphic anomalies. Still, I was able to run Oblivion at a acceptable level.

Little bit of an apples/oranges comparison, though, because I play NWN2 by slapping the space bar every two seconds, so it’s basically turn-based for me. NWN2 runs just fine for me, while Gothic 3 stutters to the point of unplayability.
